Natural Horse: Lessons from the Wild for Domestic Horse Care
Published in Paperback by Northland Pub (July, 1992)
Author: Jaime Jackson
Average review score:

Horse owners--you need this book!
I originally bought this book because I was interested in the research he had done on wild horse society, but it has been enormously helpful to me in a practical sense. In seeing what ideal, wild horse feet look like, it gave me an idea of how to handle my horse's hoof care. He has foundered many times, once with 11 degrees rotation. Despite years of pros working on his feet using heartbars and other types of shoes, his white line remained stretched out to 3/4" wide at the toe, meaning we were making no progress. Once I pulled the shoes and began to do my own trimming, frequently, attempting to get a wild horse foot shape, more progress was made in 6 months than in several years. Jaime's ideas have been such a service to my poor old horse! For some images of my horse's progress: Everything in the book is based on extensive personal experience and research. One of the most useful horse books I've come across in a long time.

At last, a truley literary discussion on the Wild Horse
Jamie Jackson has put together a sensible discussion on thewild horse that is invaluable to any one that works with the horse. The lessons he relates are very accurate and as a trainer of both wild and domestic horses I have found I am using this work as a bible of sorts in reviewing their behavoir. Behavior being the key to understanding the horse and subsequently bonding with it. Especially valuable is the excellent coverage on the Hoof, the most important part of the horse, as well as the wonderfull illustrations he has tactfully included. This work is a technical treatise, anyone will easily understand, that covers the full spectrum of being involved with the horse. Hope to see more of Jamie Jacksons work.

Nelson Jackson: Cowboy
Published in Hardcover by Directions Production Services Inc (October, 1997)
Authors: Lawanda Randall and Andrew Link
Average review score:

Wonderfully illustrated and a ingenious work.
This book is incredible. I love the way that it is illustrated and captures that particular time period of Nelson Jackson's life. I'm particularly fond of the history of how it all started, with older guys who are mentioned in the books. I believe it gives compensation so to speak to the men who came before Nelson and gives dreams to young ones who could accomplish being a cowboy as well. I have great respect for his children though, who no doubt sacrificed much not having a lot of material possessions as they could have, had their father not have made the choices he did to be a cowboy. However these children, that are pictured in this creative work have gone on to achieve much success of their own. They too have acquired many skills where training and riding are concerned. I'm impressed with the accomplishments of the older daughter Cynthia. I read about her years ago, in a sport page where there was a rodeo in Chicago and her sisters. They always seems to come in first, second and third. No don't they had great training in being competitive and at the same time compassionate for their counter parts. I highly recommend getting this publication, not only for your personal library, but it would make a lovely gift for any young person. The book is well written and illustrated nicely. Great job to the author. Truly a great story of history, and talent of this particular cowboy as well as his family. Awesome!

Nelson Jackson - Cowboy
I found this book to not only be educational, but also inspiring for young people. It gives you information crucial to understanding some of the equipment use in rodeo life, as well as indoctrinate young children on the history of one man's spirit. I contemplate that this book, NELSON JACKSON - COWBOY will inspire many children and adults to enjoy horses and the whole rodeo atmosphere while gaining a deeper respect for those who make sacrifices to live out their dreams. This is a book which will allow many to sit back and enjoy history if you will, while at the same time attaining an appreciation for all who make up America. I will continue to enjoy this book, for years to come.

Off Season: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (June, 1994)
Author: Philip R. Craig
Average review score:

I have lived on Martha's Vineyard in the off-season.
I lived on Martha's Vineyard for several years year-round, during the bustling summers and what is known as the "off season." Philip R. Craig's novel captures perfectly the sense of community that year-round Islanders enjoy. He also gives a realistic account about how everyone knows everyone else's business in a closely-knit environment. His characters Mimi and Nash are true to life. His descriptions about how people eke out a living scallopping and fishing in the off-season are also quite accurate. Craig also mixes into his cast of characters a few professional and business people, and their interaction with the native Islanders is key to his story. The suspense in "Off Season" is great, and I could not guess the outcome until the final pages of the book. I also love this book because it contains so many evocative passages about Martha's Vineyard. I feel like I am living there again when I read Craig's (a/k/a J.W. Jackson's) descriptions of my beloved Island. I know every secluded beach and back road about which he writes. When he writes about Wasque Point, I can almost see the sun setting westward over the beach in the late afternoon and feel the salty spray on my face from the crashing waves. Reading this book was like taking another vacation on the Vineyard!

The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book: Choosing, Using and Maintaining Go-Anywhere Vehicles
Published in Hardcover by Haynes Publishing (June, 1999)
Author: Jack Jackson
Average review score:

Planning an expedition?
Most Americans have the luxury of service stations at the trailhead and cell phones to call for help if we become stuck off road. For those who live in the west, where a cell phone signal is two hours away and a breakdown may be more than inconvenient, Jack Jackson's The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book has good experience and insight to offer. The British point of view makes the book a bit quirky and centered on Rovers, but a refreshing perspective. You won't find the fat tire, bigger is better mentality here. Good information on self-reliant get there and back 4 wheeling is what this book is about. The preponderance of desert travel observations were particularly useful for the locale I explore. Get it and read it with Brad DeLongs 4-Wheel Freedom. You will not want for more information.

Excellent book by a veteran off-roader.
An excellent book, covering the off-roading scene in England, the rest of Europe, the Sahara Desert, and the Middle East. Jack Jackson gives the reader much useful advice on how to travel through very difficult country, and summarizes the 4x4 vehicles available in Europe. My own book "4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving" covers off-road recreation and all-weather driving in the USA. The serious off-road recreationist will want to add both these books to his or her library. Brad DeLong

Offspring of Empire: The Koch'Ang Kims and the Colonial Origins of Korean Capitalism, 1876-1945 (Korean Studies of the Henry M. Jackson School of in)
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (August, 1991)
Author: Carter J. Eckert
Average review score:

Required Korean Government Reading
OFFSPRING OF EMPIRE: THE KOCH"ANG KIMS AND THE COLONIAL ORIGINS OF KOREAN CAPITALISM 1876-1945 is a detailed economic, historical, and biographical polemic about the origins of capitalism in Korea. The author argues, that Japanese "(c)olonialism...for better or worse...was the catalyst and cradle of industrial development in Korea...". Using the example of two brothers, Kim Songsu and Kim Yonsu, Eckart reveals a rough portrait of middle-class life in pre-and-Occupation-era Korea. Wading through economic statistics, newspaper clippings, boardroom minutes, and interviews, the author also contends against nationalistic, whether South Korean ("sprouts theory") or North Korean, theories of Korean development. What remains is the disturbing thought, that the glue holding nationalism together on the Korean peninsula, is morally bankrupt.

Although this book was published originally in 1991 (reprinted in 1997), the full effect of the events it describes are still unfolding. Relations between the two Koreas, and both Koreas' relations with foreign nations, particularly Japan, China, Russia, and the United States, are complicated by questions from just this period of history. Where is Korea? Who are the Koreans? Both these basic questions continue to unnerve Koreans as they try to locate themselves in the larger world outside Asia. Eckart's argument undermines the Korean argument, that Koreans were developing into a modern nation just like any western nation. He also undermines the role of Koreans in the capitalist development of their own country. He even, by questioning the origins of Park Chung Hee's inspiration for developing South Korea after the Occupation, undermines all of Korea's development efforts. One is left with the disturbing thought, that Korea, as the average Korean loves to say, is the land of one racial group, a theory fraught with serious moral implications.

Eckart's argument also frustrates the search for an alternative to authoritarian development by a strong government, whether colonialist or Park-esque. Its as if the Americans had crowned Washington after all, instead of devising an original alternative to the despotism the revolutionaries had just defeated. As Korea stumbles through reform with a president highly unpopular and limited by constitutional restrictions, these thoughts, this book raises, take on more urgency.

A Classic Analysis Deserves Larger Readership
OFFSPRING OF EMPIRE is, in one aspect, history of a powerful landlord family, Kochang Kims, their interactions with Japanese colonial authorities and the active role they played in the growth of textile and other industries throughout 20th century Korea. More broadly and importantly, it is a rigorous and insightful analysis of the emergence of industrial capitalism in Korea. When it was initially published, the book received criticism from Korean scholars for challenging the then-dominant model of the nationalist scholarship; "sprout theory," or the notion that indigenous sprouts of industrial capitalism were nipped by the colonial exploitation by the Japanese. Recently, however, nationalist scholarship has come under attack by a new generation of Korean historians. Much of the nationalist criticism -- including the claim that the book "rationalizes" Japanese colonial rule -- were operating under the (unstated) assumption that economic development was an unquestioned good, and since the Japanese colonial rule was evil, it could not possibly have helped Korean economic development. Some young Korean historians are now seriously questioning this assumption. Economic development , in either colonial or postcolonial Korea, no longer appears to be an unquestioned good, given its gross human rights violations, environmental destruction and other negative legacies. (North Korea in its way had to deal with the legacy of colonialism -- it can be seen as a nation where nationalism, emerged as an oppositional ideology to the Japanese colonial rule, has been elevated to the level of religious credo. The result of this, as we all can plainly see, has been disastrous to the basic human dignity of North Koreans) The evidence for continuties between colonial and postcolonial regimes is too numerous and obvious to be brushed aside. The fact that there was economic development under the colonial rule by no means justifies or excuses the Japanese domination, an act of profound disregard and contempt for the people of Korea. Acknowledging this fact simply opens the way for raising more questions and topics to be investigated about the nature of Japanese colonialism. The critical attitude of many young Korean historians indicates, indeed, that one of the most important negative legacies of Japanese colonialism, i.e. absolutist, unyielding allegiance to nationalism, (which so often breaks down into the "blood is thicker than water" variety of ethnic chauvinism) is becoming the thing of the past. Read OFFSPRING if you are interested in modern Korean history, modern Japanese history and East Asian economic development, and make up your own mind.

On the Boundaries of Theological Tolerance in Islam: Abu Hamid Al Ghazali's Faysal L Tafriqa
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 2002)
Author: Sherman A. Jackson
Average review score:

THEOLOGY: BETWEEN TOLERANCE AND EXCLUSIVITY
An excelent study of Ghazali's Faysal L Tafriqa. The author Dr Sherman Jackson carefully analyzes the context in which the book was written and shows how it is very relevant to our situations in modern times. He elaborates that "al-Ghazali's mission is to define the boundaries within which competing theologies can coexist in mutual recognition of each other, i.e., as 'orthodox,' in the sense of passing theological muster. Al-GhazAli's aim, in other words, is not to establish who among the theological schools is 'right', but rather to demonstrate the folly and unfairness of the practice of condemning a doctrine as heresy simply because it goes against one's own theology. Furthermore, he insists, even where a doctrine can be justifiably deemed 'wrong' or heretical, this does not necessarily constitute Unbelief." Everyone who is interested in reading a sober account of on-going theolgical disputes among contemporary muslims should pick this up.

Thorough, well-written, and thought-provoking
Beginning with an excellent introduction, this translation of Ghazali's work is a valuable resource for intra-Muslim discourse, as it demonstrates that theological tolerance in determining orthodoxy is needed in order to take into account differing viewpoints within Islam, so long as certain precautionary measures are taken.
The introduction is great since it orients the reader and demonstrates the significance of Ghazali's work.
This book is fantastic and I hope to see more works from this author.
